Each student on our team chose a topic that they cared about and wrote an essay that would be a chapter in “The Book of Us” a book we were going to publish with all our writing pieces in it. By being "The Book of Us" I literally mean "The Book of Us", everything in the book was done by us from the writings to the cover to the font, everything was decided by us. It was on our hands on how we wanted our book to come out. Using the "Real World Writing Purposes" by Amanda Gallagher as a guide, we each chose a style of writing to use. Furthermore, we looked at articles on topics ranging from the “Harms of Teenage Drinking” to the “Racial Identity of Emojis”, to get a better understanding of what the writing purposes ment. We also chose mentor text that would help us write our own writing pieces.

Above is my 1 topic = 18 Topics paper. Below is one of my five minute free writes that got me started on my piece.
Above is my co-MC NaJa Bailey, and to the left is myself. We had a fun time introducing the readers and also explaining our project to parents and students that walked into our classroom during exhibition. We were both center stage where there was a spotlight, that I had step up with some of my classmates earlier, shined brightly on us. |
Reflection
Taking the time to write this piece really lead me to finding the importance of Puerto Rico and my family there. At first I was just going to write about Puerto Rico and the sights to see if you visit. I wasn't able to write a lot about the sights and switched my idea to making it more personal and about my experiences.I think that solved the problem because when people read my first draft they wanted me to add some examples of events that happened in my stay over there. I loved writing about the stories and the funny times my grandpa and I have experienced. You don't get many days where you can write about what you are passionate about but I found that by doing this you produce better work. Because I was passionate about my what I was writing about I was able to create a good piece. I learned that with any writing assignment its important to add “yourself” in it and personalize it. If I could go back now and change something about my piece it would have to be adding a closing to when I’m leaving Puerto Rico and how its always hard to leave. Seeing how my piece turned out makes me realize the importance of self reflection and writing about something that you're passionate about.
