Relevance:
The most relevant topic we covered in class this week was the one about StoryCorps. StoryCorps is an organization that provides people from all over the opportunity to record, share, and preserve the story of their lives. I related to StoryCorps because for my senior project I am working with my twin sister to expand our music program we do at an Alzheimer's clinic and I could see how we might be able to save memories from some of the residents that live there and do the Memory Care Drum/Dance Circle with us. The video inspired me to realize how important everyone's life story are and how important it is to capture them. I am going to try to implement StoryCorps and try to find out how I might be able to capture the stories of some of the Alzheimer’s patients.
Interest:
Something that stood out to me this week was the 10 symbols we had to draw in art class. Mr. Enrique, our art teacher, read out many different words, for example (respect, brave, awesome, happy, legendary, mystical) and told us to pick a word and draw 10 symbols that represented that word. I Picked the word “Legendary” and got right to work. Thinking and thinking of different symbols that I could draw to represent my word. I was working away, but not really knowing why we were doing this. At the end of the class our teacher explain to us why he made us draw the 10 symbols- with this assignment he taught us that instead of writing the exact word you're trying to tell people you can draw symbols that represent that word. I realized that almost any word can be represented by some sort of drawing/symbol. Also when working on the mural we are going to paint we can represent words by portraying them as a symbol.
Additional Thoughts:
This week I think was very successful because our team as a whole is diving deep into learning more about the city where our mural is going to be painted and also about how us humans interpret and change the meaning of words. My team has learned that it is important to really know and have a good understanding of the community and culture of the city where the mural is to be painted. Therefore our team has begun to study Paradise Hills (the city where we will paint a mural on a wall). We are also learning how to interview people because we will be holding an event in Paradise Hills in order to interview people who live there.
